I`ve been doing online marketing, working from home, for about 7-8 years now and to be honest it`s been a roller coaster ride.
People saying its all sunshine and unicorns working from home, well I don`t believe it.
The high have been high and the low, well we all have those days. Working for yourself can be pretty tough, and nobody is tougher on you, than yourself. I have had days of doubt, am I on the right track? Am I doing the right thing? Why is that campaign not taking off? Why is my affiliate sales down? The list of questions goes on.
BUT
There is nothing better for me than to be able to be there for my kids. Now, I am fully aware that there is not one solution that will suite everybody. Not everybody is cut out to work from home. For me and my family, it has been THE best solution.
Time with my kids and family is invaluable. Time away from them I want to spend doing something that counts.
I think of all the time we spend working, why not work with something that we love. Work with something that gives us a purpose.
Working from home, creating value for OTHERS, gives ME a purpose.
All though working from home has been a roller coaster I would not change a thing! Working from home building my own business, has allowed me:
- To take control of my time
- To spend time with people I love
- To work flexible hours
Don`t get me wrong I put my hours in. A lot of hours, but on my own terms, nobody cares if I work in the middle of the night or Sunday afternoon. Nobody cares that I go working out every Thursday at 8.30 or go in to school to help out for the afternoon.
I know some people struggle to make the home business or online business work. I want to share 7 things that I believe has determined my online success.
7 Tips to Make ”Working from Home” Successfully Happen
1. Commitment
All though the online ride has been a roller coaster, I have made a commitment to my online business to make it work. I am stubborn, I don`t quit and that pulled me through some rough times through the years.
With my background being from Sweden, having English as my second language there has been challenges. I knew though that going back to a 9-5 was not for me, I HAD to make this work, I left no other options on the table.
Make a commitment and follow through with it. Tweet That!
2. Implementation
It`s all fine and dandy to study up on things but at some point you have to take action you have to implement what you learn. Sometimes learning by doing is the way to go.
Right now I`m taking on Twitter, I have not been using it much in the past, but I see huge potential networking with like minded people. For me diving right in learning as I go is my best way to learn. I don`t have all the answers but with trial and errors I will figure it out.
Implement and take action, you can always correct along the way. Tweet That!
3. Learn from Your Mistakes
We all make mistakes. It`s ok. That`s how we learn. I have made a ton of mistakes, I try not to dwell on it too much, but rather learn from it and move on.
4. Focus
When I first started out I had a pretty successful website right off the bat. I was lucky that the first niche I chose for affiliate marketing worked out for me. My not so good idea was then to build a ton of other affiliate sites, similar to the first one, to increase my income 10 times. Well, it`s a lot different to focus on 1 site than try to work with 10 of them.
Le Bron James did not become a basketball star by doing a little bit of basketball, a little bit of soccer, a little bit of wrestling… He played basketball and I bet he was pretty focused doing so too.
Focus on one thing until that takes off. When that is working the way you want, when you have that automated, then sure you can allow yourself to move to the next thing.
5. Stay Organized
Staying organized is very important. Although you work from home, set up your area for your business. Keep it organized.
Keep track of what needs to be done. Setting up my weekly ”to do” list help me move forward and get things done.
6. Patience
In my case creating websites, I`ve had to be patient. Things will not happen over night. Building a successful site is an ongoing process.
Posting 3 posts a week like I do with this site might not seem much but over the time of a year that`s 156 posts. 156 posts that can rank in Google and bring organic readers to the site, readers that hopefully enjoy what I do.
7. Network with Others
Network with like-minded people, doing the same thing you are doing. If you blog reach out to bloggers in your niche and work together.
There is plenty of room for all of us. The online opportunity and working from home, is not only for a few. It`s very real and if you want it, go out and get it.
I`m a big fan of Gary and want to leave you with his very powerful video. Anybody can do it! If it`s in you, you can do it!
Working from home has been a great choice for me and my family, and I wouldn`t have it any other way.
- Don`t want to miss out on the ”snack session” after school.
- Don`t want to miss out on fun days with the kids in the summer.
- Don`t want to miss out on the Halloween celebration in my first grader`s class.
- Don`t want to miss out on my 5th graders “last” end of the school year party.
Good thing I don`t have to!

Hello Vicky.
Very well done article. In fact, it is similar one I did just a little while ago. One can not get too much of that. Your niche is perfect and gets the point across very nicely. We (my wife Evelyn and I) love it.
Would you object to commenting on our site?We are newbies, and would really appreciate any input you could give us.
Thank you again and warm wishes.

Boy did I need the info in this article! It’s easy to say you want to work from home, but it’s hard to focus on work when you have little ones vying for your attention along with dishes and laundry and the like. Although, you did reinforce my desire to focus on one niche website for my affiliate marketing, which to be honest is probably enough for me. Thanks for the tips!

Hi Sonja,
I know exactly what you are talking about, been there myself :). It can be hard to finding that balance between work, kids, the home and everything else. I know I had a rough time in the beginning balancing things out.
Focus is key! I tried to manage too many sites, and for me, it just didn`t work.
Thanks for chiming in Soja,
Vicky
