No matter what online journey you are on, affiliate marketing or network marketing maybe, for some reason you are not getting the results you want. For some reason the wanted income is left out. You might even feel like you are failing at the “fake it till you make it” approach…
I run into a lot of people on social media, promising me great success with programs they try to push down my throat. “Magic programs that will generate tons of money in no time.”
The truth is if you scrape a little on the surface, a lot of these people are still struggling, even though they claim that they have found the “secret program“.
These are not the only people struggling though, a lot of hard working online marketers fail to get the result they want. Why?
Out in the “real world”, we take time to educate ourselves. We spend 12 years in school before even getting to collage or university. When we are there it’s about 4 more years of school, yet we expect to know it all with online marketing after reading an e-book…
Out in the “real world”, we work hard to get a raise, which often takes years to accomplish. There’s often a paved path for us, with limited opportunities. Yet, with online marketing we expect to make a fortune within months…
There’s something not right with this picture.
In this post we will talk about different reasons to why you might be struggling, reasons why most people fail with online marketing.
9 Reasons Why Most People Fail with Online Marketing
1. Somebody Convinced You It Was Going to Be Easy
“Just use our system and you will make 10K monthly next month…”
Does it sound familiar?
Did somebody convince you that “this is it” this is the “golden ticket”, “the secret” that everybody is looking for?
I’m sorry, I really am, there are so many scammers out there, that are just out to make a buck. They don’t care about engagement and relationships; all they want is a commission.
Not saying this is everybody far from it. But if you were promised, to use “this system” to make 10K next month or to “just” get two new members and we will build your downline… then it sounds like unrealistic expectations.
Online marketing is not easy, you have to learn the basics and you have to implement and take action on what you learn. If you are new there will be a learning curve, and before you get over that learning curve you might find it hard and overwhelming. That’s ok, that’s how we all start.
2. Somebody Convinced You It Would Happen Over Night
Success does not happen over night, it takes hard work and long term commitment.
You can think what every you want about Gary V’s language, but I love his video about “Overnight Success”
3. You Are Not Having Realistic Expectations
To summarize the two first points – if you think it was going to be easy and happen over night, you are not having realistic expectations. If you are struggling with online marketing let me ask you this:
What have you actively done, and how much time have you put in to get the result you are getting?
Be honest with yourself.
If your answer is, that you write and submit one blog post a week and submit that post to your Facebook account and Twitter account, then maybe it’s time to step it up a notch. Maybe you should be submitting 3 articles weekly, that are keyword optimized. Maybe you should also actively be engaging with your Facebook followers and Twitter fans, trying to get more followers… You get the picture.
The outcome depends on what you put into it.
It all starts with realistic expectations, it’s not going to be easy, you will have to learn the stuff, it will not happen over night, it will take time.
BUT if you are willing to put the time, effort, sweat and tears into it, the sky is the limit!
4. You are Not Believing In What You’re Doing
You are not 100% in, you’re trying but you know you will most likely fail and give up so why go all in. You are still doubting that what you are doing, is right. It doesn’t matter if it’s a MLM, affiliate marketing or any other business you have to believe in what you are doing.
Sometimes it will take that first visitor to your site or your first sale, to really become a “believer” of what you are doing. My first sale with affiliate marketing was $4. It was not the amount but the confirmation that it was working…
Find something you believe in, commit to it and go all in.
5. Lack of Focus
If you are trying to master content marketing, twitter, facebook, Instagram, paid advertisement, Youtube, snapchat right of the bat, you will have a rough time. If you are jumping from program to program, searching for “the secret” that will solve it all. If you are buying into all the “shiny money making objects” out there…
STOP!
Focus is so important!
Find one things to focus on when you master that, sure you can move on. Find one place where you can learn the basics and stick with that. Decide what kind of strategy you want to go with and focus on that until it works for you.
6. Poor Strategy
If your only strategy is to send out auto messages on Twitter with a link to a sign up page, that is a poor strategy. It will take a lot more to connect with people and build an online business. A better approach would be to set up your own website, direct your traffic to helpful content and then if suitable and relevant give them an offer.
Some poor strategies go as far as spamming.
7. Spamming
If you spam people, via email, socialmedia or any other source they will not listen to you or purchase anything. Buying lists to send out spam emails is not a good strategy. Nobody wants to be around a spammer.
8. No Consistency
This is another important piece of the puzzle, consistency. If you work on content marketing and put out 2 posts one week and nothing for 3 months, don’t expect great results. If you engage on Twitter for 2 months but then give up, don’t expect great results. If you send out personalized emails to connect with people but give up after 20, don’t expect great results.
If you are taking on a task, keep doing it until you see the result you want. Sure you might have to tweak along the way but stay consistent.
9. You Are Giving Up
It’s simple, if you give up before you reach any success you have failed. If you stick with it, maybe adjust a few things along the way, but as long as you are trying and working towards your goals you are not failing. You are in the process. There will be ups and downs, but all those road blocks are learning moments.
The way I look at it:
Failure is so important. We speak about success all the time. It is the ability to resist failure or use failure that often leads to greater success. I’ve met people who don’t want to try for fear of failing. – J.K. Rowling
What road are you taking?
Are you looking for a fresh start? An online business that you can build over time, that you can commit to? Build something you can be proud of? Something that’s yours, that you create and run?
Setting up a website and monetize it with affiliate marketing can be a great long term strategy to build your own online business, on a topic that you truly enjoy. But only if you are willing to:
- put in the time necessary
- NOT expect “over night success”
- have realistic expectations
- believe in what you are doing
- stay focused and consistent with a good strategy
- NOT give up
Is this you?
I would love to hear your thoughts on this, why do you think people fail with online marketing? Do you agree with the points above?
Have a productive day,

Thanks for this article. It is tricky to market a new product and I do get frustrated at times but I just keep plugging along! Hopefully it will pay off in the end!
