6 Ways to Make Extra Money as a Teacher

6 Ways to Make Extra Money as a Teacher

It is widely known that teachers aren’t the highest paid professionals out there.  Even though, they are, in one way or the other, the trainers of all other professions.  Go figure.  But, that’s a discussion-rant for another day.  🙂

Today, we’ll talk briefly about ways to use the knowledge and training as a teacher to make extra money.  I’m a firm believer in using what you got.  Everyone has their own base of knowledge to work from.  That knowledge base will allow you to have a unique way of presenting information and training to others.  Below are suggestions to use to make your presentations.

1. Tutoring

As a teacher, the ability to tutor would seem to be almost second nature. Using this skill set to make additional money would keep you in the same field of work (if you wanted to not stray too far away from your profession) as well as possibly help sharpen your teaching skills.

You could tutor on just about anything!  If you didn’t want to tutor in the subjects that you teach, you could always tutor on a favorite subject or hobby.  There are other areas that could useful too; like ‘public speaking’, dressing for success or even time management.  There are many areas to tutor in that could be curtailed to work with your time and schedule.

Don’t overlook online tutoring, this is something that has flexible hours but can bring in some good extra money.

2. Write an eBook

You might find writing a book to be more lucrative and beneficial than initially thought.  “Who would want to read about me, or what I do?”, you might ask.  You’d be surprised at the inquisitiveness of most people.  True, it might not make the Best Sellers’ List, but it might put extra money in your pocket.  You could write about how you started as a teacher; or how you arrange your class and prepare for a session; or even how you find the time to grade papers.  Your tidbits of information could be just what someone else needs to make their life easier, and they are willing to pay.

3. Share Your Experiences on a Blog

Don’t want to write a book about it? Start a blog and share your experiences there! A blog can make money from ads or from recommending products through amazon for example. Who wouldn’t want advice from a teacher when it’s time for back to school shopping? Do a blog from a teacher’s perspective or any topic that you find interesting. Today it’s easy to

4. Do Seminars

Hosting seminars is another way of making extra money.  Similar to tutoring, seminars provide the opportunity to assist others to understand a topic better.  Interacting with other professionals and peers could be beneficial not only for them but for you as well.

Imagine the exchange of information that could occur.  You could discuss everything from where to get the best supplies to who, if anybody, gives discounts to the teaching professionals.  Be creative.

5. Become a Motivational Speaker

Though many motivational speakers hold seminars, the two are entirely different.  Having said that, you do not have to have a seminar in order to be a motivational speaker.  You only have to have something positive or motivational to say.  Give your version of the ‘sunny side up’ pep talk.  Let people know you’ve been where they are or have been—and there is hope and light at the end of the tunnel.  Let them know they have it inside of them to be a success at whatever they do.  Let them know nobody has all the answers; and all they have to do is try!  You can do this!  (See how easy that was?) ?  And, you can make money lighting that fire or starting that spark in others.

6. Become an SME

Becoming an SME (Subject Matter Expert) is going to take time and effort.  Subject matter experts are the go-to people in a profession.  To be honest, many of these people don’t make a dime when helping others.  Many may not know that they are the SME for their circle of influence.  So, how can you tell?  If people often come to you asking for your opinion about something or information about how to do something, Congratulations!  You are a SME.   Your mission is to be paid for the knowledge you possess.  If nothing more, you can use your SME status to sell you ebook, or offer one of the other services mentioned above.  Good Luck!
