8 Fun Ways to Think Creativly Just Like Your Kids

8 Fun Ways to Think Creativly Just Like Your Kids

August 3, 2015 By Vicky Leave a Comment

A small boy playingAre you stuck on an idea? Are you looking for a niche for your website? Or maybe you are just looking for ideas on how to be more creative.

I have two kids that have so much creativity and imagination that I wish I had a fraction of it. My 11 year old son loves to draw and write cartoons, he can do page after page after… he has so many creative ideas and just let it flow. There are no boundaries and anything is possible.

His question is not IF the cartoons are going to be published, it`s how do I get it done. I love his drive and excitement about any project he takes on.

My 6 year old daughter, can play for hours. Games that are made up on the spot. Creativity is just flowing. Give her some paint and a paper and there is no hesitation of what should be created, she dives right in and if she`s not happy with the first painting. She just makes another one.

Seeing the creativity of my kids, the ideas and suggestions they come up with, is a daily treat for me. I want them to nurture it. I know I will do anything in my power to encourage them to keep being creative…

It seems though that when we get older we put up road blocks. Some of them come from others telling us ”you cant do that” or even worse we tell ourselves ”I cant do that”.

Or we think that an idea has to be perfect from the start, not true. Kids are a great at playing pretend games because the do it all day long.

If our creativity is lacking or you feel stuck, what can be done to get it going again? Here are some ideas to get your creativity flowing again.

8 Fun Ways to Think Creativly Just Like Your Kids

1. Surround Yourself with Creativity

If you sit in room with white walls, surrounded by nothing, that will not help your creativity. Get out and surround yourself with creativity. Depending on what you are looking to do, find a good setting for it. Being around kids and listen to them can be a great start for creativity. Go to a painting studio or pottery studio. Visit the park for inspiration. Just to give a few suggestions.

2. Jump In and Be Part of the Game

Don`t just watch your kids interact with them. If you go to a painting studio, don`t just watch, paint something.

3. Crazy Ideas Are Great

The crazier it sounds the better and more fun. My kids come up with the most ”intersting” ideas, games and caracters. The caracter of one of my son`s cartoons is rumpa man… The latest made up song from my daughter ”how many toes does a fish have”.

4. Brain Storm

Brain storm and don`t shut down any ideas. The idea that you would have thought was not a ”good one” might be the best one after some work.

5. No Failure Only Learning

If our kids mess up a painting or a game does not turn out the way they want to, we don`t say ”you should probably quit”. We don`t say ”painting is not for you, you failed”. We encourage and say ”try it again”. Do a new painting. We don`t look at it as failure.

I have never looked at my kids and thought ”failure”, never ever. There is learning, there is process, there is progression… but NEVER failure. If they want to learn how to ride the bike, we practice until they ride a bike. Not being able to ride that bike after the first try, is NOT a failure. It is the first step in riding a bike.

Don`t stop your creativity by looking at things as failure. Look at it as learning, a stepping stone.

Take failure out of your vocabulary.

6. Be Flexible

Things happens things change. Be flexible. Kids games change constantly, they are flexible. Sometimes it`s good to go with the flow, take in new impressions will allow you to be creative.

7. Practice

It will probably not be perfect the first time, practice, practice, practice. Just like riding the bike, practice makes perfect. If you design logos for example. Your first one will probably be a lot different from logo number 200. The more you do something the more ideas you get the more creative you get.

8. The Sky Is The Limit

My son does not only want to be a cartoonist, he also want to be a movie producer like Steven Spielberg. Is that unrealistic?

I`m sure that when people first thought of flying in an airplane, that seemed pretty unrealistic. Or if they 50 years ago said that we would have the computers or smartphones that we do today, some probably thought that was unrealistic.

Great people create great things daily. Great people do great things daily!

Remember those days when you didn`t limit yourself, you could anything. You truly thought anything was possible.

Bring that feeling back! Get the creative juice flowing again.

Have a productive day,

Vicky
