New year, new beginnings and new goals.
I always feel excited to set my new goals for the year.
The feelings of possibilities and expectations are there and hopefully some confidence built up from last years success.
Setting goals is not the hard part. The hard part is making sure to reach them. What are some things you can do to make sure you reach your goals that`s what we will be diving into.
To better understand how to move forward you want to start out with taking a look at where you came from. We talked about that in our last post – Goals 2016 Take a Look In the Rare Mirror.
In this post, it`s all about looking forward. To set new goals and how to create the best circumstances to reach them.
What Do You Want?
The first thing you need to do, if you don`t know already, is figure out what you want. Do you want to travel? Do you want freedom? Do you want more money? What makes you happy? What do you want for your business?
This might sound easy, but what you are doing right now, is it making you happy or are you doing it because of expectations from the rest of the world? Figure out what YOU want and what you want for your business. If you have not yet started that online business that you might have been thinking about… well a great time is to do start now.
Why Should You Set Goals?
Goals will keep you on the right track. Success is a choice. If you set your goals you know where you are going. Without them you are kind of lost and leave it up to somebody else or something else to decide your destiny.
Think of it as taking a road-trip. Going from point A to point B. If you have no point B, no goals, how do you know where you are going? You don`t.
By setting goals you are setting yourself up for success. You are on the way to getting what you want. By setting goals you plant seeds in your mind. It helps you focus on what`s important to you.
Your Values and What`s Most Important to You
What`s your core values? What`s most important to you?
You want to make sure your goals line up with that.
Say that you are working for yourself, freedom is the most important thing for you. You get a business offer that is really good, but it means that you would not have the time or freedom that you worked so hard for… would you still accept the business offer?
Spending time with my kids and family is my priority. I could not accept a ”job” that took me away from that, no matter how good the pay was…
Set Clear Measurable Goals
When you set your goals make sure they are crystal clear. Submit 100 blog posts in a year is a very clear measurable goal. When the year is up you either did or you did not post your 100 blog posts, right.
Make more money is a very fuzzy goal. Saying I want to make my first dollar online by Feb 1 2016, is a much clearer goal. Or saying I want to turn 50 of my visitors into customers each and every month.
The clearer the goal the better chance of reaching it.
Shoot for the Stars – Long Term Goals
What are your long term goals? Now I`m talking about goals that would change things for you. Big goals that you feel you can reach but it would be stretching it. If you have a coaching business, getting 25 new clients a month would that change things? If you could make 10 K / month with your affiliate sites would that change your situation? Maybe you want to reach a big audience, receiving 100 K monthly visitors would that help?
What`s your long term goal?
Break it Down – Short Term Goals
To be able to reach your big goal you need to break things down into smaller reachable tasks and goals.
What will it take for you to get 25 new clients monthly?
If we use that as an example then you need to know your conversion. Say out of every 250 visitor you will get a new client. That means that you will need 6250 visitors to your site to reach your goal of 25 new clients monthly, right.
How do you get to 6250 visitors? Maybe you submit content to your blog on a weekly basis. Content that rank in Google and other search engines. Say that every post get`s 20 new visitors, low count but let`s use that for the example. That means that you need to submit 313 posts to reach the visitor count of 6250.
Say that you submit 3 posts weekly. Then it would take 105 weeks to reach your long term goal.
The short term goal would be to write 3 weekly posts. See how we took the big goal, broke it down to smaller reachable goals.
Now you have a realistic expectations of what needs to be done and a time frame of how long it will take.
What`s Your Time Frame?
Make sure you put a time frame on your goals, so you have something specific to work after.
A Goal Without a Plan Is Just a Wish
Realistic Expectations
There are so many people failing to reach their goals. I think specially online, many walk into the ”online business” with unrealistic expectations. I see questions like, “how can I make money fast?” or “can I make 10K within 6 months?”. I`m all for shooting for the stars. But know what will be required how to get there.
Knowing what you get yourself into, know what you want and find out how to get it and you will be much better off.
It`s not a race, appreciate the journey
What`s Your WHY?
So look at your big goal and ask yourself WHY is this important. Why do you want to reach this big goal? My reason WHY is my kids. I want to spend as much time possible with them, when they are little.
I also love to travel. I live in the US but go home to Sweden every summer. If I was working somewhere else, that would be very hard to get the time off to do.
What`s your WHY?
How Will Reaching Your Goal Change Your Daily Life?
Imagine what it will be like when you reach your main goal. How will that change your daily life? Will it allow you to have more freedom? Will it allow you to travel more? Will it allow you to spend more time with family and friends?
If you lived today with your main goal in place, what would your day look like?
What`s your Reward When You Reach Your Goal?
Reward yourself when you reach both your short term and long term goals. There are all kinds of rewards to give yourself…. Take the afternoon off. Go to lunch at your favorite restaurant. Write a thank you note to somebody that has supported you along the way. Give to charity… the list goes on. It`s important to recognize your steps forward.
Know This:
- What`s your main goal?
- What`s your short term goals to get to the main goal?
- What do you have to do on a daily or weekly basis to get there?
- Set up a time frame for both your long term and short term goals?
- What will be your rewards when you reach these goals?
Make sure you do things on a regular basis to bring you closer to your goals!
